A Community a Decade in the Making
Duke Homes expects to start building the first homes in Center Grove’s newest upscale community, Aberdeen, this summer and it has been a long time coming. Aberdeen is actually over a decade in the making.
Back in 2006, plans were all set to launch The Abbey, an upscale golf course community in the Center Grove area. The 1,000 acres of The Abbey were going to include 2,000 luxury homes, townhomes, and condo-style homes all surrounding a private golf course and “town center.”
Thankfully, Mike Duke and team paused plans at the earliest signs of the housing bubble and in doing so avoided creating a master-planned community during the worst financial crisis since the Great Depression.
Now, 12 years later, Duke Homes is in the process of opening Aberdeen, a different community with a different name, in the same place, and with the same mission. In 2006, Mike Duke spoke of The Abbey saying, “Family is important to us and we see The Abbey as an opportunity to create an environment that will enhance the lifestyle and promotion of family” (reference). That same mission is the driving force behind Aberdeen and its amenities. Duke Homes believes in family and in community – they believe life is better together, which is why Aberdeen will be packed full of gathering points and community places built for activity and interaction.
Duke sees the 10 years they waited to develop the site as a blessing. They had a chance to refine the plan, which resulted in a more focused approach to the original mission. Foregoing the private country club and shrinking the size of the site to instead focus on providing amenities that cultivate a more family-friendly, healthy community. Planning started over a decade ago, and now, the final result, Aberdeen, is finally here.
